Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

So a few years ago there was a documentary about Fred Rogers. Coming out very soon is the movie about him starring Tom Hanks.

The thing is, I grew up in the Pittsburgh area so when I watched Mr. Rogers I felt like he WAS my neighbor. I loved the show well into my middle school years when I should have theoretically outgrown it. I watched the documentary that came out a couple of years ago and cried quite a bit.

I am looking forward to watching the Tom Hanks movie, and based on the trailers I feel like it will be a wonderful representation of what he meant to a generation, what he gave us, and what he helped us through.

The fact that he casually & wo pomp/ circumstance put his feet into the same pool of water as a black man, that he washed his feet. He didn’t make it a giant fanfare, he didn’t make it this bold political statement. He just did the right thing, quietly & purposefully, his own way.

That he spoke to his fish while he was feeding them because a blind child wrote to him about how there were things in the show that they missed…

I don’t have enough emojis or gifs or words. He was unique. He was exemplary. He was the epitome of our best selves. I miss him.

  1. It’s not his fault, but I feel like Mr. Rogers gave me an inaccurate expectation of the world. I was too young to grasp the concept of “Ideal”, or maybe I just can’t because things are true or they aren’t. Everything can be black and white and still provide a dazzling spectrum…but I digress. Apart from fearsome Lady Eileen, and I wondered why he had someone so creepy on his show, I was set up to expect decency and balance that is real, but ostracized. I love him anyway; it’s not his fault. He remains an example of what one human can do against many.
